What muscles do overhead squats work?
- Overhead squats work primarily the Shoulders, Triceps, Traps, Quads, and your Core Abdominal muscles. These muscles become engaged as you move throughout the full range of motion.
How do you do a PVC Pipe Overhead Squat (close grip)?
- In order to perform a PVC Pipe Overhead Squat, start by grabbing the PVC Pipe with a close grip (hands should be right next to one another or no more than shoulder-width apart) and raise overhead.
- Feet should be faced forward and placed about shoulder-width apart. (This is the Start Position)
- Slowly begin to squat down, bending the knees and flexing your hips.
- Keep your core engaged (Envision flexing your mid section) as your squat down with your chest up and shoulders back.
- Your goal is to have your legs parallel with the floor (knees are bent at a 90-degree angle).
- Press into your heels and straighten legs to return to the Start Position.
Repeat for reps.
Number of Sets: 4
Reps per Set: 2-6
Rest Time: 1-2 minutes
How can I improve my overhead squat strength?
PVC Pipe Overhead Squats are a great exercise for for improving Shoulder and T-Spine mobility. Once you master them, you can start incorporating the use of barbells with light weight and then gradually increase that weight as your strength and flexibility improve.
The bar should only be loaded with weights that you can completely control. Also, you want to make sure that it’s just enough weight to help keep your hands back far enough behind your head to allow you to stretch as you squat down.
Squat down only as low as you can without causing pain to your shoulders or sacrificing your proper form.
